Why choose Mutual Driving School for your driving instructor training?

Mutual Driving School is a family run business that was established back in 1976 with the owner still playing a major role in the day to day running of the business. His pride and passion to make this a success has not changed since the day he first opened for business some four decades ago, and then with just one driving instructor. The business quickly grew with its reputation and found itself rising to the top of its field, and in a very short space of time it has outgrown many of its competitors.

How will you train with Mutual Driving School?

A driving instructor is not just a job, it is a vocation that offers years of extraordinary job satisfaction, alongside the chance to meet new people on a daily basis, and help change and improve their lives.

In order to train you must:

  • Have had a full UK licence for at least 4 years
  • Have no more than 5 points on your licence
  • Not been banned from driving within the last 4 years
  • Be a 'fit and proper' person (in the opinion of DVSA)
  • You must pass a DBS (Enhanced Level Disclosure and Barring Service) check - Formally known as a CRB Check.

The training course has 3 parts and you need to pass 3 tests in order to become a fully qualified and Approved Driving Instructor.

Important - All exams are conducted by the DVSA (Driver Vehicle Standards Agency)

Mutual Driving School offers flexibility with the training course payment options. You can pay as you go, paying for each module separately, pay for your course in instalments or pay for the course in full to take advantage of the discounts available. The course has been tailored to take into account both your ability and availability. As a guide, the course takes between three and six months. If you want to be on the road quicker, we will work with you to try and achieve this, subject to certain factors such as the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) test availability.

The training course consists of 3 modules, Theory (Part 1), Driving Ability (Part 2) and Instructional Ability (Part 3). You have to pass all three parts in this order and must complete the whole examination within the two years of passing the theory test (Part 1).

PART 1

Theory Training

This test is made up of 2 sections: Multiple choice and Hazard perception. You need to pass both sections before you can move onto Part 2.

We provide you with all of the materials you will need, along with online and telephone mentoring to help with your studies.

PART 2

Driver Training

Part 2 training consists of 10 hours of 1 to 1 in car training with your driving instructor trainer and online elements, including session plans. Your trainer will help you apply the knowledge you gained at Part 1 to ensure you are putting the theory into practice in your driving. Mutual Driving School Part 2 training helps you drive in a way that consistently demonstrates best practice driving technique (learned at DVSA Part 1 theory test).

The purpose of this section is to increase your awareness of your own driving, in preparation for you to observe and coach other's driving when you are an instructor.

Our trainers understand the importance of both aspects and will coach you to success in each. These are the required elements of the DVSA Part 2 driving ability test around which this section of the course is based.

PART 3

Driver Instructor Ability Test

2 half hour driving lessons on subjects chosen by your examiner. They will play the role of a learner driver and assess your ability to teach by asking questions and making typical learner driver mistakes. You will receive a grade in this test and only grade 4 (adequate), 5 (good) or 6 (excellent) will result in official recognition of an ADI. Your personal trainer will act as the role of an examiner and give you the experience of different roles and teaching subjects. Each session is tailored to the individual trainee with planned lessons and feedback. You will receive 40 hours 1to 1 in car training to help you pass.

Emma Pate

"After joining Red Driving School I soon become disappointed in what I paid for, I wanted to find a more professional driving school. I went to meet Mutual Driving School and soon knew I would enjoy working with them. After my initial driving assessment I had regular training which fitted in around my family commitments. My instructor was very fair and honest and also made sure I was prepared for my part 2 and part 3, even giving me extra help when needed. Overall I found Mutual Driving School very helpful and supportive and during my training and would always recommend them to anyone wishing to learn to drive or become a driving instructor."

Brian Stevens

"They gave me all ins and outs of their business and it is a family run business with a long establishment. There was no pressure for me to go with the company so I walked away to have a think. This was my first mistake. I ended going with a on line company and my second mistake was I paid out a lot of money and I started my course with them but after some time I knew within myself that I was not going to get though the paper work they had sent to me to even get to a part one test. They made this so confusing with lots of form filling and box ticking. So I went back to Mutual and talked with Sam and Graham, they were a great help."

Jimmy Batten

"My Journey from start to finish was a very enjoyable one. My trainer made the process very professional and great fun but not at the expense of learning. He was always on hand to deal with an queries along the way and was a phone call away for any additional support I needed. Thanks"

Yumna Kolil

"I came to Mutual Driving School back in 2012 having been let down by the AA Driving School. After starting my part 2 with them, I felt I wasn't getting the standard of training I needed and decided to search around online and came across Mutual Driving School. It was their long establishment of over 40 years that was the deciding factor for me and decided to give them a go. I passed my Part 2 and Part 3 all first time thanks to my trainer Nathan. I am now working with Mutual Driving School and feel a big part of the family."

Russell Michaels

"I have been a driving instructor with Mutual Driving School now for 30 years!!! I trained with them back in the 1980's and things were a lot different to the current qualification process!! The main attraction to becoming a driving instructor was the fact I could work the hours that suited me and I always liked meeting new people on a daily basis and the satisfaction I got from teaching someone a new skill for life. Even to date, new students come to me having been recommended by their Mum and Dad that passed with me many years ago."

Russell Michaels - Mutual Driving School Instructor

Clifford Smith

"I would have to give Mutual Driving School and big thumbs up!! I started my training with them back in 1999 and have been with them ever since and now a senior ADI and Driver Trainer. I love my job, not many people can say that. It's so rewarding to be able to choose my own hours that suit my family commitments which works great for me as I spend some days up in Lincolnshire with the family. If you want to have great training and work with a great driving school then look no further than Mutual Driving School."
